A Guide on Using My SRT and LRC Files

Follow this guide to listen to your otome drama CDs with timed English subtitles!

You Will Need:

• ♥ Media File: Any audio track (.mp3, .wav, .m4a) or video (.mp4, .mkv).
• ♥ Translation File: Download the matching subtitle (.srt) or lyric (.lrc) file from my page or elsewhere.

Note: If your media came with a .vtt file, convert it to .srt or .lrc first using a free online converter.

SRT vs. LRC: What’s the difference?

• ♥LRC (Lyric files): Synced lyrics designed specifically for music players.
• ♥SRT (Subtitle files): Universal subtitle files supported across general media players.

 

Why not other media players?

• ✕VLC Media Player: Won’t show .srt subtitles on audio tracks unless the audio is converted into a video file.
• ✕Windows Media Player: Doesn't support .srt or .lrc files at all.
• ✕MusicBee: I used this for a bit, but the lyrics end up noticeable out of sync as you get further into longer tracks.

This guide covers a few recommended players depending on your chosen file type and platform. Choose one below to get started:

PC Options

Foobar2000 (LRC)

Foobar2000 is a free, lightweight audio player that can play almost any music format. It doesn't show lyrics by default, but you can easily add synced lyrics with the OpenLyrics plugin.

Downloading Foobar2000 & OpenLyrics

1 Download Foobar2000

 

Select the 64-bit installer.

 

Note: Mac users can download the macOS version from foobar2000's website instead.

 

To get synchronised lyrics to appear, you need to download the OpenLyrics plugin, which is also on the foobar2000 website.

 

2 Download OpenLyrics

 

3 Run the foobar2000.exe file & install the program.

 

Select standard installation.

 

4 When you run foobar2000 for the first time, this menu will pop up. Pick any layout for now, I went with Album List + Properties.

 

You can also pick a colour scheme in the Colours section.

 

Installing the OpenLyrics Plugin

1. Click on File > Preferences (Ctrl + P)
2. Click on the Components tab in the left sidebar
3. Click the Install... button on the bottom right
4. Locate the OpenLyrics file you downloaded (usually named something like foo_openlyrics-v1.10)
5. Click Apply on the bottom right
6. Foobar2000 will then ask to restart; click OK.

 

 

Setting up your Audio File & Lyrics

1 In the top menu, click View > Layout > Enable layout editing mode.

 

 

Note: While in Layout Editing Mode, you can right click on any panel to choose what it does.

 

2 Right click the panel you want the lyrics to appear and click Replace UI Element...

 

 

3 Scroll down on the menu that appears and select OpenLyrics. Click OK.

 

 

Note: You can also customise and drag around your other panels, I like to have Album Art and Playlist View displayed on the left, and OpenLyrics Panel on the right.

 

4 Click on View > Layout > Enable layout editing mode again once you're done to disable Layout Editing Mode.

 

Configuring OpenLyrics to read your LRC File

1 Click on File > Preferences > Tools > OpenLyrics. In the left tab expand Search Sources and click on Local Files.

 

This is what the Local Files tab looks like by default.

 

2 Change the File Name Format to %filename% and the Storage Directory to Same directory as the track. Click Apply, then OK.

 

 

3 Make sure your LRC file has the exact same name as your audio file and sits in the exact same folder.

4 Open your audio file by clicking File > Open... and selecting your track.

Customising Lyrics in Foobar2000 (Optional)

1 Click on File > Preferences > Tools > OpenLyrics. In the left tab, click on Display.

 

Here you can customise your font, font size, main text colour, highlighted text colour, among other options.

MPV Player (SRT)

MPV Player is a free, open source, and cross-platform media player that supports a wide variety of media file formats and subtitle types.

Audio	MP3 ✅ | WAV ✅ | M4A ✅
Video	MP4 ✅ | MKV ✅
Subtitles / Lyrics	SRT ✅ | LRC ✅

 

Note: Both LRC and SRT formats work, but SRT is the better choice for general media players since it defines explicit end timestamps so subtitles don't linger.

 

Downloading MPV Player

1 Download MPV Player

 

Select Windows builds by zhongfly (git).

 

Select mpv-x86_64-20260912-git-14f2d48cbc.7z for 64 bit system.

 

Setting up MPV Player

1 Extract the mpv-x86_64-20260912-git-14f2d48cbc file and run mpv.exe.

 

 

2 Drag your audio file into the MPV Player window.

 

3 If your SRT and audio files share the exact same name and exact same folder, the subtitles will load automatically.

If not, simply drag and drop the SRT file directly into MPV just like you did with the audio file.

Customising Subtitles in MPV Player

1 You can adjust your subtitle size by right clicking anywhere in the window, then clicking Subtitle > Scale up/down.

 

 

2 For better subtitle readability, you can toggle the cover art on/off by right clicking anywhere in the window, then clicking Video > Track > Cover.

Mobile Options

Setting up subtitles on your phone is more straightforward. For the best mobile experience, I recommend using an audio track paired with an .lrc lyric file.

To get started:

1. Place your audio file and your .lrc (or .srt) file together in the exact same folder on your phone.
2. Make sure both files have matching filenames (e.g., track.mp3 and track.lrc).

Note: Most mobile music players will pick them up automatically, but you can also add them manually inside the app settings if needed.
